3.2 Requirements for certification

This article covers the steps that need to be completed in the app prior to applying for carbon neutral certification.

Obtaining certification the from Pathzero requires:

  1. Completing the steps outlined in this article in the Pathzero platform
  2. Entering into the licence agreement (covered in section 3.3)

Steps to certification of first reporting period

If the organisation has never had a reporting period certified as Carbon Neutral through the Pathzero platform, the reporting period to be certified will be selected automatically.

The first period that can be certified is the most recently completed 12 month reporting period. The reporting period will be for the reporting cycle selected during the initial onboarding process and can be either calendar year or financial year.

In-app checklist - first time certification

The Following steps need to be completed in the Pathzero platform:

  1. Complete measurement for the 12 month period
  2. Implement a minimum of 3 reduction initiatives
  3. Create an offset strategy for residual emissions
  4. Pass verification / validation of work done
  5. Enter into licence agreement

Each one of these items will be explained in more detail below.

Step 1: Complete measurement for 12 month period

This step requires the organisation to use the Measure module in the application to complete measurement for the 12 month period that is to be certified.

There are circumstances where 12 months of data may not be available for the 12 month period. For example, if the company was founded during the prior reporting period you may not have 12 months of operations. 

If this is the case, the organisation will have to wait until their reporting cycle rolls around and there is 12 month of measurement available to be certified.

Requirement: 12 months of measurement must be completed for any reporting period to be certified as Carbon Neutral.

Step 2: Implement a minimum of 3 reduction initiatives

This step requires the organisation to use the Reduce module in the application to create an emission reduction plan and implement at least three reduction initiatives.

The person to whom the reduction initiative was assigned needs to document that their initiative has been implemented before it will count towards the tally of 3 reduction initiatives.

Step 3: Create an offset strategy for residual emissions

This step requires the organisation to use the Offset module to document and implement their offset strategy.

Refer to the guidance in section 2.5 information on

  • Choosing an acceptable offset method
  • Set up the purchase and retirement of relevant offset units
  • Disclosing your strategy in public

Step 4: Pass Technical Assessment / Validation of work done

This step requires the organisation to use their consulting sessions (30-minute consultations included in the subscription plan) to request a review per the guidance in section 2.6.

Requirement: A Technical Assessment must be performed on initial application and the sooner of every 3 years or whenever the Base Year is recalculated thereafter.

Requirement: Validation work is required to be performed for every reporting period that requires certification.

Requirement: 3rd Party validation is not required 

Step 5: Enter into licence agreement

This step requires the organisation to enter into a licence agreement as described in Section 3.3
