IELab EEIO Factors

This article provides background information on the Australian IELab EEIO Factors

The Industrial Ecology Lab (IELab) is a collaborative platform for multi-region input-output (MRIO) modelling. MRIO modelling can be used to develop environmentally-extended input output (EEIO) factors, which estimate GHG emissions resulting from production and upstream supply chain activities of different sectors and products within an economy.

The MRIO emissions data set used, covers the Australian economy across 112 industries. IELab tracks transactions between economic sectors and consumers in Australia. The resulting EEIO emissions factors can be used to estimate GHG emissions for a given industry or product category. This allows for a spend analysis to be performed in an emissions inventory where money spent per item can be converted into tonnes CO2-e.
